Beginner tips for navigating London

Planning a trip to London, or perhaps making it your new home? The city's public transport network is one of the most comprehensive in the world. This guide is designed to demystify the system, offering practical advice and insider tips to help you travel around the capital with confidence.

Paying for your journey

Before you step onto a bus or tap through a Tube barrier, you'll need a way to pay. London's transport system is largely cashless. The two main ways to pay are Contactless and Oyster.

Contactless Payment

Use a contactless bank card or Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, etc. Just tap on the yellow reader to start and end your journey on Tube and rail services.

Oyster Card

A reusable smartcard. Top it up with credit and use it just like a contactless card. Good for managing travel budgets or if you don't have a UK contactless bank card.

When using Oyster or Contactless, the system automatically limits the amount you're charged daily or weekly, so you'll never pay more than the equivalent Travelcard, no matter how many journeys you make. Just make sure you use the same card/device every time you tap.

Top tip: trainslive.uk allows you to check the price of a single journey and find fare caps. The Tube area of our site has everything you need.

Planning your route

While the iconic Tube map is a work of art, it's a diagram, not a geographical map. For real-time planning, technology is your best friend.

trainslive.uk is your friend

Our website provides live departure times, multi-modal route options, disruption alerts, and - for many National Rail services - even tells you the best carriage to board.

Check for disruption

Always check your route before you travel to avoid unexpected delays or station closures. Engineering works are especially common at weekends.

The Underground

The Tube is the backbone of London's transport system. With its colour-coded lines, it's often the fastest way to cross large distances.

Tube etiquette

Follow the golden rule on the escalators: stand on the right. And at the platform, let passengers get off the train before you board.

Mind the gap

It's a famous phrase for a reason. There can be a considerable gap between the train and the platform edge at some stations.

Fares are higher and trains are much busier during peak hours. If your schedule is flexible, travelling off-peak will save you money and offer a more comfortable journey.

Beyond the Tube

London's rail network extends far beyond the Underground, connecting the entire city and its suburbs.

London Overground

The Overground orbits the city, connecting areas not well-served by the Tube. It's invaluable for exploring neighbourhoods like Shoreditch, Peckham, or Hampstead Heath. Don't forget to familiarise yourself with the new Overground line names and colours!

The Elizabeth Line

The newest addition offers fast, spacious, air-conditioned trains that cross the city from east to west, connecting Heathrow Airport directly with central hubs like Paddington and Canary Wharf.

Docklands Light Railway (DLR)

Serving East London, the DLR is a driverless train network. It's the primary way to reach Canary Wharf, Greenwich, and London City Airport. Try to get the front seat for a unique view!

On the Surface

Sometimes, the best way to see the city is from above ground.

The Red Bus

A fantastic and affordable way to travel. The 'Hopper Fare' allows unlimited bus journeys within one hour of tapping in. A great way to sightsee!

River Services

For a scenic route, consider the Thames Clippers river bus. While more expensive, they offer stunning views of the city skyline.

Walking and Cycling

Central London is more compact than it looks! Walking between nearby stations is often faster than the Tube. For longer trips, consider the Santander Cycles hire scheme.

Your London Adventure Awaits

Navigating London is an adventure in itself. By mixing and matching these different modes of transport, you'll not only get to your destination efficiently but also discover the diverse character of this incredible city. And don't be afraid to ask for directions - people such as station staff and the police are more than happy to help!
